Base Units

“Base Units” are epoxy cubes embedded with shapes that function as a kind of negative space of objects — both organic forms and remnants of human existence shaped by erosion and decay. In this work, I revisit modernist movements in art from a contemporary perspective. I begin with the clean, modular forms of Minimalist art and continue toward Post-Minimalism, which reintroduces the touch of the hand into elemental forms through imperfect, organic finishes. This reflects my ongoing interest in the relationship between nature and culture, through which I challenge the distinction between “nature” — primal and untouched — and “culture,” encompassing human-made products, whether beautiful or ugly. To me, they exist along a continuum that cannot truly be separated.
